Attention to the Color of a Moving Stimulus Modulates Motion-Signal Processing in Macaque Area MT: Evidence for a Unified Attentional System

Directing visual attention to spatial locations or to non-spatial stimulus features can strongly modulate responses of individual cortical sensory neurons. Effects of attention typically vary in magnitude, not only between visual cortical areas but also between individual neurons from the same area. Here, we investigate whether the size of attentional effects depends on the match between the tuning properties of the recorded neuron and the perceptual task at hand. We recorded extracellular responses from individual direction-selective neurons in the middle temporal area (MT) of rhesus monkeys trained to attend either to the color or the motion signal of a moving stimulus. We found that effects of spatial and feature-based attention in MT, which are typically observed in tasks allocating attention to motion, were very similar even when attention was directed to the color of the stimulus. We conclude that attentional modulation can occur in extrastriate cortex, even under conditions without a match between the tuning properties of the recorded neuron and the perceptual task at hand. Our data are consistent with theories of object-based attention describing a transfer of attention from relevant to irrelevant features, within the attended object and across the visual field. These results argue for a unified attentional system that modulates responses to a stimulus across cortical areas, even if a given area is specialized for processing task-irrelevant aspects of that stimulus

Clio-Guide. Ein Handbuch zu digitalen Ressourcen für die Geschichtswissenschaften

Im Frühjahr 2016 erschien erstmals das Handbuch zu digitalen Ressourcen für die Geschichtswissenschaft. Nur zwei Jahre später erscheint nun eine zweite, erweiterte und aktualisierte Auflage des Handbuchs. In der Einführung zur ersten Auflage war bereits darauf hingewiesen worden, dass es einige thematische Lücken gab – ein Umstand, der unvermeidlich war, angesichts der thematischen Breite des Handbuchs – in der PDF-Version umfasst es immerhin 1.109 Seiten. Zudem ist das Feld der digitalen Geschichtswissenschaft schnelllebig und durch rasche Veränderungs- und Entwicklungsprozesse gekennzeichnet. Die Tatsache, dass die Guides intensiv genutzt werden, hat die HerausgeberInnen motiviert, eine zweite Auflage früher als ursprünglich geplant zu publizieren und damit zumindest einige der inhaltlichen Lücken zu füllen. So hat etwa Rüdiger Hohls für den Teil A „Digitale Arbeitsformen und Techniken“ einen Guide Digital Humanities und digitale Geschichtswissenschaften verfasst, der grundlegend in ein Thema einführt, das zum Kontext aller Clio-Guides gehört. Mit dem Guide Zeitungen von Astrid Blome wird in Teil B „Sammlungen“ ein für Neuzeit- und Zeithistoriker zentraler Quellentypus behandelt und die derzeit verfügbaren digitalen Zugriffs- und Nutzungsoptionen umfassend vorstellt. Der Guide Niederlande, Belgien und Luxemburg, eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit von Ilona Riek, Markus Wegewitz, Christine Gundermann, Bernhard Liemann und Esther Helena Arens, füllt im Teil D „Regionen“ unter den Ländern Westeuropas eine Lücke und ergänzt die bereits vorliegenden Guides. Das in der Einführung zur ersten Auflage angesprochene Fehlen eines Guides zur Jüdischen Geschichte konnte mit der zweiten Auflage ebenfalls behoben werden. Anna Menny, Miriam Rürup und Björn Siegel haben einen umfassenden Guide Jüdische Geschichte im deutschsprachigen Raum verfasst. Mit dem Guide Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust von Laura Busse und Oliver Gaida liegt ein Guide zu einem für die deutsche Zeitgeschichte zentralen Thema vor. Dies gilt in gleicher Weise für den Guide DDR von Henrik Bispinck. Sämtliche schon vorliegenden Guides der ersten Auflage wurden in die zweite Auflage übernommen. Für eine umfassendere konzeptionelle Überarbeitung bestand hier kein Anlass; es wurden in einigen Fällen formale Korrekturen durchgeführt sowie nicht mehr gültige URLs aktualisiert und Verweise auf nicht mehr existierende Ressourcen gelöscht. Allen Autorinnen und Autoren sei für Ihre Arbeit herzlich gedankt; insbesondere denjenigen, die sich der Mühe unterzogen haben, einen neuen Guide für diese zweite Auflage zu verfassen. Pupil size dynamics predict dLGN firing mode over a wide range of timescales

Pupil size is a commonly used proxy for waking brain states such as arousal, and has been related to activity modulations in cortical sensory areas. Here, we asked whether the dorsolateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), which provides sensory input to the visual cortex, is modulated by pupil-indexed arousal. Observing that the pupil size oscillates at multiple timescales, we developed a method to show that the spiking mode of the dLGN is predicted by pupil size oscillations over several of these timescales. Overall, we found that tonic spikes preferentially occurred during pupil dilation, while bursts occurred during contraction. These preferences could not be explained solely by pupil size per se or by the locomotion of the animal, and were also present during periods of stimulus viewing. We conclude that dLGN spiking activity is modulated by pupil-indexed arousal processes on various timescales, influencing the mode in which sensory signals are passed on to the cortex

Feature-based attentional integration of color and visual motion

In four variants of a speeded target detection task, we investigated the processing of color and motion signals in the human visual system. Participants were required to attend to both a particular color and direction of motion in moving random dot patterns (RDPs) and to report the appearance of the designated targets. Throughout, reaction times (RTs) to simultaneous presentations of color and direction targets were too fast to be reconciled with models proposing separate and independent processing of such stimulus dimensions. Thus, the data provide behavioral evidence for an integration of color and motion signals. This integration occurred even across superimposed surfaces in a transparent motion stimulus and also across spatial locations, arguing against object-and location-based accounts of attentional selection in such a task. Overall, the pattern of results can be best explained by feature-based mechanisms of visual attention

Robust effects of corticothalamic feedback during naturalistic visual stimulation

Neurons in the dorsolateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the thalamus are contacted by a large number of feedback synapses from cortex, whose role in visual processing is poorly understood. Past studies investigating this role have mostly used simple visual stimuli and anesthetized animals, but corticothalamic (CT) feedback might be particularly relevant during processing of complex visual stimuli, and its effects might depend on behavioral state. Here, we find that CT feedback robustly modulates responses to naturalistic movie clips by increasing response gain and promoting tonic firing mode. Compared to these robust effects for naturalistic movies, CT feedback effects on firing rates were less consistent for simple grating stimuli, likely related to differences in spatial context. Finally, while CT feedback and locomotion affected dLGN responses in similar ways, we found their effects to be largely independent. We propose that CT feedback and behavioral state use separate circuits to modulate visual information on its way to cortex in a context-dependent manner

Primer abordaje de la obra del artista e ilustrador platense Alberto Dreizzen : El caso de <i>La Chica Astronauta</i>

El presente escrito, inscripto en la investigación Las artes en la ciudad 1958-2006. Archivo, Memoria y Contemporaneidad (Programa de Incentivos, FBA, UNLP), desarrolla algunos aspectos de la obra del artista e ilustrador platense Alberto Dreizzen. Siendo que el proyecto en que se enmarca el trabajo busca construir un corpus de documentación y posterior interpretación sobre las artes en la ciudad de La Plata (sub-eje artes visuales), analizamos la producción de este autor a partir su desempeño en ese campo. Abarcamos el periodo que comprende desde su surgimiento o aparición en escena, en la década del ochenta hasta la actualidad. De este modo se reconoce su amplia trayectoria como artista e ilustrador y su relación de pertenencia con la ciudad de La Plata. Los trabajos de documentación y relevamiento consisten en una serie de actividades: reuniones periódicas con el artista, entrevistas, relevamiento y sistematización de imágenes (actualmente en proceso). Como resultado de este trabajo y de las charlas informales, surgen algunas primeras clasificaciones y categorías que pueden organizar su obra en diversos items y sub-items. El azar, el proceso, el resultado como aspectos comunes en la obra de Pablo Guio : Consideraciones acerca de las condiciones productivas y espectatoriales de su obra

En el marco del Programa de Documentación en Arte (IHAAA) del Proyecto de Residencias El Basilisco Avellaneda, se lleva a cabo el análisis y reflexión acerca de tres grupos de obra del artista tucumano Pablo Guiot, residente en el Basilisco en el período junio-julio 2005. Como primera medida se procede a distinguir las obras en tres grupos diferentes bajo un criterio de asociación dado por sus particularidades formales y procedimentales, para luego abordarlas descriptivamente. Una vez sentadas estas bases, se procede a realizar un análisis interdiscursivo. Éste se estructura en base a operaciones presentes en las producciones de Guiot y su asociación a otras producciones como a modos de hacer artísticos. Para ello se tienen en cuenta tres ejes que atraviesan toda su obra y que asimismo la caracterizan, estos son el azar, la idea de proceso y el abanico de resultados, que emerge de la combinación de aquéllos.Eje: Arte ContemporáneoFacultad de Arquitectura y Urbanism

Is the uptake, engagement, and effectiveness of exclusively mobile interventions for the promotion of weight-related behaviors equal for all? A systematic review

Mobile health interventions are promising behavior change tools. However, there is a concern that they may benefit some populations less than others and thus widen inequalities in health. This systematic review investigated differences in uptake of, engagement with, and effectiveness of mobile interventions for weight-related behaviors (i.e., diet, physical activity, and sedentary behavior) based on a range of inequality indicators including age, gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020192473). Six databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, ProQuest, PsycINFO, Pubmed, and Web of Science) were searched from inception to July 2021. Publications were eligible for inclusion if they reported the results of an exclusively mobile intervention and examined outcomes by at least one inequality indicator. Sixteen publications reporting on 13 studies were included with most reporting on multiple behaviors and inequality indicators. Uptake was investigated in one study with no differences reported by the inequality indicators studied. Studies investigating engagement (n = 7) reported differences by age (n = 1), gender (n = 3), ethnicity (n = 2), and education (n = 2), while those investigating effectiveness (n = 9) reported differences by age (n = 3), gender (n = 5), education (n = 2), occupation (n = 1), and geographical location (n = 1). Given the limited number of studies and their inconsistent findings, evidence of the presence of a digital divide in mobile interventions targeting weight-related behaviors is inconclusive. Therefore, we recommend that inequality indicators are specifically addressed, analyzed, and reported when evaluating mobile interventions
